KEY GOAL

Build user-centric Solutions that match business goals.

MY ROLE

My role in this project was to collect user insights through research and use them to define the product, build prototype and help facilitate the concept validation testing of the proposed solution.

In a team of 6, I was the UI/UX Designer. My core responsibilities included Conducting research, ideating concepts, wireframing, iterating based on feedback, and delivering final designs, it also entailed contributing to high-level strategic decisions that reconciles user needs, business goals and current technological trends, also cooperating with engineers to ensure smooth handover of deliverbles and accurate implementation of prototypes.

UNDERSTANDING THE USER

How do we solve this problem?

What do users want?

I conducted user research to gather both business and user requirements and i also spent some time analyzing their competitors to understand industry best practices and how to structure the outcome of this project.

In order to gather reliable information from which i could use to distill my potential users’ essences as personas, and to take forward in my design process, i had to kick off my research by taking a closer look at the target market. This is to help me evaluate the feasibility of this new product. This method allowed me to discover our target market, collect and document opinions and also make informed decisions.

I incorporated research into my design process by deploying surveys, interacting with a sample group of businesses and people through interviews.

PERSONA

This Persona represents the standard customers, their goals, motivations, frustrations, and abilities. That facilitates us empathize with the users and demonstrate a thorough know-how of who they may be and what they want to achieve.

Persona 2 (3).png

After conducting research by interfacing directly with potential consumers and businesses, here are some key point synthesized.

NOTE: The cards below were gotten after synthesizing the trends in the research feedback

Structure

Our target businesses are mostly privately owned, they run as corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorship with fewer employees and less annual revenue than a corporation or regular-sized business

Matters Arising

Our potential customers want to Stay on track with their finances however at the same time, they do not want to be trapped in a sophisticated process that could lead to loss or wrong handling of their finances.

Other expectations

Freelancers want a tool that ensures that they are fairly compensated for the work they do. Turning hours, miles and expenses into invoices and bills at the click of a button

From this result, It became clear that at minimum, this Project need to incorporate solutions that will be

01

Affordable

02

Not Sophisticated but Easy to Use

03

Scalable

EMPATHY MAP

Based on the persona, i needed to build empathy so i could shape my product strategy to be used during the usability testing sessions. A deep understanding of user behavior and needs makes it possible to define who a product is being created for and what is necessary or unnecessary for them from a user-centered point of view.

COMPETITIVE & COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS.

Users are creatures of habit, and a user who has spent time with my competitors might come to my product with certain expectations based on those previous experiences.

I performed competitive and comparative analysis because i wanted to at least have an idea of the standard practices in the market, identify noteworthy user experiences and then identify features to avoid.

I Need to point out that the purpose is not to copy the competition but to inform the design process by learning from what my competitors are doing.

THERE ARE SOME MAJOR POINTS AND NOTES  I WANTED TO CALL OUT

Here i used the SWOT strategic planning method based on elements of  — strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to evaluate the internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external factors (opportunities and threats) that impact your products or design decisions.

Here is the summary of the competitive and comparative analysis on Airtable.

BREAKING DOWN THE PROCESS

Based on user interviews and competitive analysis, I created personas that represents users. I used these as reference while creating wireframes and mid-fidelity mockups to ensure designs are focused on the user.

User flow Diagram

Also Before ideating and sketches, we came together to decide on features and pages that would be more valuable for users based on the research found. Below is the structure of the platform we ended up agreeing on.

User flow Diagram helped further layout the platform to make sure usability and available features are easy to get to depending on where you are and what you're doing on the site.

Sketches

Since there are several parts to the platform, I decided to break it into section based on the sitemap created which is in the same order as how users would be onboarded.

LESSONS LEARNED

This project taught me how to collaborate efficiently with Engineers/Developers. The process of trying to understand constraints of each person while designing wasnt an easy task. To combat designing something that couldn't be built, I was always checking in to see if features were possible and simplify potential features that would take too much time to complete.
